In the southwest of P.R China lies the vast expanse of the Chengdu plain. The plain boasts pleasant weather, beautiful scenery, and flowers during all four seasons. As the capital city of Sichuan, Chengdu is a city with many faces. This is an incredibly modern and vibrant place. It has been give many names such as “Eastern Eden” named by foreigners who visited Chengdu, “Tian fu zhi guo (the land of abundance)” because of its fertile land and rich agricultural products, and “home of giant panda”.. The city comprises many beautiful elements including: mystery, charm, antiquity, a fertile, quiet, and relaxing environment and grace. More than 2500 years ago, a king of the ancient Shu Kingdom established his capital in the centre of the plain and named the capital Chengdu from “ One year for gathering, Two years for county, Three years for capital”. Since 310 BC, Chengdu has been the political economic and cultural center of the Sichuan Basin. Chengdu is sometimes called the City of Brocade; the Jinjiang, which means brocade, is a river that flows through the city. The breeding of silkworms and the weaving of brocade were highly developed as early as in the Han era (206 B.C.-220 A.D.). In the Five Kingdoms Period (907—960), Mengchang, king of the Latter Shu Kingdom, decreed to plant hibiscuses on the protective wall of the city. So Chengdu is also called the City of Hibiscus.
